Teaching Kids to Pray- String and Cup Phone Object lesson

A Fun Summer Family Activity to Teach Your Kids about Talking to God

You probably made these when you were a kid.  A plastic cup (or tin can) phone.  This is a totally old-school and totally fun project that even your kids will love.

You will need:

2 plastic cups

1 nail or pair of scissors

6ft of yarn

1. Poke a small hole in the center of the bottom of each cup.

2. Push the yarn through the outside of the first cup and tie it in a knot on the inside.

3. Push the yarn through the outside of the second cup a tie a knot at the end of the string.

4. Pull the string tight.  There will be a knot on the inside of both plastic cups.

5. Your phone is ready to be used.

6. Make sure that the string is taut when you’re ready to talk.

*To teach kids about prayer, let your children practice talking to you or to one another. Then say, “How can you carry on a conversation using this phone?” Let them explain.

Say, “That’s right! You talk into the cup. The person on the other end can hear what you’re saying. Then, you listen to see what the person on the other end has to say! Prayer is like that. We can talk to God- just like we’re talking to a friend. We don’t even have to use fancy words. The best thing about prayer is that it is a conversation. When we pray, we should take time to listen to God as well.”

If you use this idea, leave a comment to let us know how you did it!

So, what do you think?
