All That Hard Work For Nothing

Our wheels are always turning. We build homes and businesses. We wake up early, go to bed late, and do our best to keep up. We create. Attempt to innovate. But in spite of all of our great intentions and hard work, sometimes we end up flat. Why is that?

Solomon tells us what all of our work will amount to without God.

Psalm 127:1-2

“Unless the Lord builds the house,

those who build it labor in vain.

Unless the Lord guards the city,

The guard keeps watch in vain.

Is is in vain that you rise up early

and go late to rest,

eating the bread of anxious toil;

for He gives sleep to his beloved.”

Here are a couple of thoughts to consider regarding our daily undertakings.

1. Check the foundation. Are you building something that will eventually crumble? A city without God will crumble no matter how may guards are blocking the parameter of the city. Our families will also crumble under the weight of divorce, rebellion,  fighting, and distraction- if our foundation is anything other than God.

2. Is God helping you finish this work? If God is not with you, chances are, you will not finish what you set out to build in the first place.

Today, I am reminded that hard work honors God (Prov. 31:10-29). However, all of our work, striving, and “accomplishments” are nothing without Him.

Rest Assured- When you have set out to build something with God as the solid foundation, the weight of whether or not your efforts will succeed belongs completely to God. He gives sleep to his beloved. Rest. Assured.
